The Adventist University of the Philippines (AUP) Department of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) celebrated a defining milestone for the Batch Aureon of 2026 with its third Laboratory Pledge and Pinning Ceremony held at the Philippine International Church on July 31, 2026. The event marked the formal entry of 71 students into their clinical division as they are “called to shine with purpose in heart and service in hands.”

Ms. Yanna Yvonne Macayan, MLS department chair, reminded the batch that their work involves more than just analyzing specimens; every result produced has a “direct impact on human lives.”

A Keynote “Prescription” for Success

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Chamberlain Agtuca Jr., a distinguished clinical pathologist and AUP alumnus from 30 years ago. Drawing on his extensive experience, Dr. Agtuca provided the students with five “prescriptions” for their future careers:
1. Do No Harm: Summarizing the Hippocratic Oath as the foundation of medical ethics.

2. Study the Science: Encouraging lifelong learning and the mastery of evolving medical knowledge.
3. Learn the Art: Developing the “soft skills” of negotiation, patience, and humility when dealing with patients and colleagues.
4. Master the Process: Trusting the journey through hardships and recognizing personal limits.
5. Practice Kindness, Empathy, and Patience: Urging students to see their work as a health ministry, especially for those facing life-changing illnesses.

The Pledge and Pinning 

The highlight of the event was the Lab Pledge Ceremony, where students donned their professional attire and recited a solemn pledge led by Mr. Gershon Mark Cortez, MLS faculty member. The batch’s new pins feature a microscope at the center, symbolizing a pursuit of precision and discovery, surrounded by radiating rays reflecting the “Aureon” call to shine “with purpose in heart and service in hands.”

Voices from the Field 

The ceremony also featured testimonies from those who have navigated the path before. Mr. Israel Valerio Jr., MLS Batch 2013, shared his journey from a student struggling with blood banking to becoming an associate manager for laboratory operations, challenging students to “master their craft” rather than just studying to pass. Additionally, John Christian Iglesia, MLS Intern, offered a relatable perspective on the rigors of the clinical division, sharing how he overcame academic and health challenges to reach his internship.

The event concluded with a dedicatory prayer by Pastor Abram Christopher An and closing remarks from Dr. Maribel Balagtas, the College of Health dean. Dr. Balagtas commended the students for passing their comprehensive exams and reminded them that their profession is ultimately a “service to God.”
